About

MEGA is a New Zealand-based cloud storage service that puts end-to-end encryption (E2EE) at the core of everything it does. Files are encrypted on your device before uploading, meaning MEGA's servers only store ciphertext — even MEGA employees cannot read your files. It offers 20GB free, making it one of the most generous free tiers available. MEGA also supports large file transfers, password-protected share links, and an encrypted chat service (MEGAchat).

Key Features

💡 Tips

  • When creating a share link, enable "Password protection" so only people with both the link and the password can access the file — great for sharing sensitive documents.
  • Free accounts have a monthly transfer quota (around 5 GB). If you share large files frequently, consider a Pro plan (from ~€4.99/mo) for higher transfer limits.
  • Save your Recovery Key immediately after signing up. Because of E2EE, MEGA cannot reset your password — if you lose both your password and Recovery Key, your files are gone permanently.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is end-to-end encryption?

End-to-end encryption (E2EE) means files are encrypted on your device before being uploaded. Only you hold the decryption key. MEGA's servers store only the encrypted data — no one at MEGA can see your file contents, which provides a much higher level of privacy than standard cloud providers.

What happens if I forget my password?

Because of E2EE, MEGA does not store your password server-side and cannot reset it for you. Your only recovery option is the Recovery Key generated when you signed up. Always store this key in a safe place — without it, a forgotten password means permanent loss of access to your files.

Is there a transfer limit on the free plan?

Yes. Free accounts have a monthly bandwidth quota. Once exceeded, download speeds are temporarily throttled. If you regularly share large files, upgrading to a Pro plan removes transfer limits and gives more storage.
